Capital gains taxes may quietly reduce more of your investment returns than you realize.

But the tax code includes several strategies that may help reduce that bill.

Three often-overlooked areas include investment-related expenses, cost basis adjustments, and real estate selling costs.

H.B. Fuller Is Worth $3.4 Billion, and an Activist Just Offered $1.2 Billion for One Division

H.B. Fuller Company (NYSE: FUL) trades near $61 after activist Ancora Holdings offered $1.1 billion to $1.2 billion in cash for its Building Adhesive Solutions business. At the high end, the proposal equals roughly 36% of H.B. Fuller’s entire $3.4 billion market value, even though the division represents only part of the company.

The numbers make the proposal harder to ignore. Building Adhesive Solutions generated $427 million of first-half revenue and about $63 million of segment adjusted EBITDA, while H.B. Fuller produced $181 million of adjusted EBITDA in Q2 alone. You are effectively getting a public valuation marker on one of the company’s lower-margin businesses.

H.B. Fuller also raised 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $650 million to $675 million, while adjusted EPS guidance stands at $4.60 to $4.90. Near $61, the shares trade around 13 times the midpoint of adjusted earnings, giving your valuation case support even without an asset sale.

A Sale Could Attack the Debt Load

Net debt stood at $1.96 billion at the end of Q2, with leverage at 3.1 times adjusted EBITDA. If you see a deal anywhere near Ancora’s proposed price, the proceeds could materially reduce debt and leave H.B. Fuller

focused on its higher-margin adhesive businesses.

The $1.2 Billion Number Is Not Guaranteed

Ancora’s proposal is not an agreed transaction, and selling the division would also remove its earnings contribution. The discount only closes if management can turn any asset monetization into a stronger balance sheet and better returns from the businesses that remain.

Super Micro’s Revenue Grew 78%, Yet the Stock Still Trades Near 10x Adjusted Earnings

Super Micro Computer Inc. (NASDAQ: SMCI) trades near $35.79 after fiscal 2026 revenue surged 78% to $39.1 billion and non-GAAP EPS climbed to $3.63 from $2.06. Shares jumped about 13% after management projected another major step higher in fiscal 2027.

The company now expects $65 billion to $72 billion of revenue this fiscal year, well above the roughly $52.5 billion Wall Street had expected before the report. At today’s price, you get the stock for roughly 9.9 times the adjusted earnings it just produced, despite revenue potentially approaching $70 billion.

Demand remains unusually strong. Super Micro entered the new year after receiving more than $60 billion of new orders, while Q4 gross margin improved to 17.5% from 9.5% and adjusted EBITDA reached $1.67 billion.

Growth Is Still Priced at a Discount

One analyst now expects fiscal 2027 adjusted EPS of $5.13, which would put the shares near seven times forward earnings. Your valuation case does not require that forecast to be perfect, because even trailing adjusted earnings leave Super Micro at a single-digit-to-low-double-digit multiple despite explosive AI infrastructure demand.

Cash Flow Explains the Skepticism

Operating cash flow was negative $6.8 billion in fiscal 2026 as inventory and working-capital needs expanded rapidly, while dilution and convertible financing remain concerns. If you want the low multiple to rerate, Super Micro needs to prove its huge order book can translate into cash rather than simply higher revenue.

APA Trades Below 9x Earnings as a $900 Million Buyback Targets 6% of Its Shares

APA Corporation (NASDAQ: APA) trades near $40 after Benchmark raised its price target to $46 from $40, citing lower costs, improving efficiency, and continued debt reduction. Even after a strong run, the stock still changes hands at roughly 8.5 times trailing earnings.

APA generated more than $1.2 billion of free cash flow during the first half, including $738 million in Q2. Management plans roughly $900 million of second-half share repurchases, equal to more than 6% of the current market value, giving your valuation case a direct per-share catalyst.

Net debt has fallen to about $3.3 billion after APA repaid $2.3 billion since the end of 2024. Those repayments have eliminated more than $155 million of annualized interest expense, so you have improving financial flexibility alongside the low earnings multiple.

Buybacks Follow the Debt Cleanup

APA already repurchased about $99 million of stock during Q2, and the larger second-half program comes as leverage approaches management’s $3 billion net-debt target. Lower interest costs and fewer shares can push more free cash flow toward each remaining shareholder without requiring faster production growth.

Oil Prices Still Control the Math

Production fell nearly 12% year over year in Q2, while stronger commodity prices helped protect cash generation. If you want the sub-9x multiple to rerate, APA has to keep producing strong free cash flow even when oil prices provide less support.

Actionable Picks This Week

Progressive (NYSE: PGR) Progressive has fallen roughly 24% over the past year while earnings per share compounded at about 44% annually across the last three years. That is a divergence that eventually resolves, and Q2 gave no reason to think the business is the problem, with EPS beating estimates by nearly 7% on revenue up 7.3%. Now the honest part: the models disagree sharply.

The Excess Returns framework puts intrinsic value far above the current price, while a straight P/E comparison shows 11.1x sitting slightly above both the fair ratio of 10.6x and the peer average of 9.3x. You are buying the earnings trajectory, not a screaming multiple discount, and you should know which of those two things you are underwriting.

Insmed (NASDAQ: INSM) Insmed reported Q2 revenue above expectations on August 6, and GF Value pegs the stock as roughly 47% undervalued. That is the bull case, and it is real. The bear case is on the same page: price-to-sales sits at 25.44 against the company’s own historical median of 18.19, meaning it is more expensive than its own history on the only multiple that applies to an unprofitable business.

The Brinsupri launch is genuinely happening at pace, and guidance raises this early usually mean the ramp is holding rather than frontloading. Treat this as growth at an inflection rather than a discount, because that is what it is. The risk is competitive entry or reimbursement friction slowing the curve before the guidance range is proven.

Green Plains (NASDAQ: GPRE) trades at about 8.5 times earnings against an Oil and Gas industry average near 13.1 times and a peer group at 20.8 times. Here is what the screeners will not tell you. The analyst price target is $14.00, and the stock closed recently at $14.97.

It has been trading above the widely followed fair value, and at least one analyst position is explicitly to take profits after a rally exceeding 65% year-to-date. Against the industry multiple, this is inexpensive. Against where analysts think it should trade, it is roughly at fair value. Which framing matters depends on your holding period.

Fast Movers to Watch

  • Xenon Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: XENE) The Q3 2026 NDA filing for azetukalner is confirmed, the cash position is $1.34 billion, and the runway extends through 2029. Those are real, and they matter.

What is also real is that the stock has returned 87% to 111% over the past year and trades at roughly 5x book against a biotech industry average of 2.7x, so this is a catalyst trade rather than a value setup. Analyst targets averaging near $77 leave upside from the $62 to $66 range, but you are paying up for a de-risked asset, not buying a discount.

  • Commvault (NASDAQ: CVLT) Commvault beat fiscal Q1 by 22% on adjusted EPS and grew revenue 11%, then fell 17.8% and got downgraded by Piper Sandler to Neutral with a $133 target. The stock now sits around $141 against an analyst consensus near $161, which is roughly 14% of upside rather than the enormous discount some screens suggested.

The subscription business is the number that governs the multiple, and the selloff was attributed to the fiscal 2027 ARR outlook being merely reiterated rather than raised. Worth watching for the next print rather than buying the dip blind.

  • AppLovin (NASDAQ: APP) Three valuation models produce three different answers here, ranging from 38.5% undervalued to 9.9% overvalued depending on whose framework you use. Q2 missed on both revenue and EPS, shares fell about 8% after hours on August 5, and significant insider selling has been flagged.

The gaming business is genuinely strong, and the current P/E of 34x sits below a tailored fair estimate near 49.8x. But when the models disagree this violently, that disagreement is itself the information.
